One day later…

“Sugar…”

My jaw tensed at the country accent that flowed through the crack in my door. I was not opening it.

“Honey, are you okay? Zara is worried about you…”

Sure she is. Go away.

“Hello?” A change in tone. This voice was higher than the last and accented with words that rolled off her bloody tongue.

“Listen, I know what you saw yesterday may have come as a shock… I’d like to explain what happened if you’d let me.”

Silence. Followed by mumbled curses from the other side of the door. Then more silence. I watched as the sunlight faded beyond my window and turned to night. Sleep did not come easy and when it did I found myself awakened with nightmares of those men using me. One of them was undressing me and the other two stood by, ready to jump. Zara showed up in the middle of it, green lights flashing all around. She was laughing when she bit through my jugular and drank me dry.

Two more nights of nightmares wore on my brain. My eyes were already open when the sun peeked at me over the horizon and my stomach rumbled with extreme hunger. My medicine wasn’t here, having been in the backpack that I lost when I was almost captured at Soren’s castle. Having an overactive brain and over dramatic stomach was hard to manage, even though I was now an adult, I struggled to keep my thoughts in order.

I would have to leave the room soon and I winced as they tried again, both Zara and Rebuh to get me to come out. I could have sworn at one point they left a plate of food right outside in hopes that I’d open the door to eat it. I laid down after pacing for a little longer, ignoring their taunts. The emptiness in my stomach made me feel like I was going to throw up. The two times I did come out was when customers kept Rebuh busy and I had to use the restroom. Luckily that was only a skip and a hop down the hallway.

When the next voice slipped through the wood, I thought I was daydreaming. “Audrey?” His voice was silky and strong, careful and cautious. His voice brought back feelings of safety, warmth and curiosity. As well as a set of mint green eyes that I could see in my head like they were burned into my soul.

Nox.

I got up and ran to the door, throwing it open with force and almost tripping as I threw myself into his arms. He stumbled back into the wall behind us but hugged me back with an embrace that said ‘I’m glad you’re safe.’

“You’re back!” I breathed into his chest. He smelt like a fresh green forest after a wild rainstorm. His fingers trailed up and down my spine with a gentle ease and I instantly calmed as I soaked in the silence between us that said so much and yet not enough.

“I told you I’d be back.
